What's Happening in Amador County California

Stay at Rest – A Boutique Hotel, and explore Plymouth, CA, nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and located on Historic Highway 49 just south of Placerville.

When you visit Plymouth, you can enjoy our beautiful surroundings while visiting the many wineries in the adjacent Amador and El Dorado Wine Country.  If you prefer other activities, there are historic museums, parks and towns to explore.  Lakes and rivers to paddle, hike and fish. Mountains to hike, ski, snowshoe, bike ride and snowmobile.  Arts are alive and well in our area with numerous art galleries, music venues and live theater.  Any time of year you will find the perfect adventure in Amador County.

August and September every Thursday – Plymouth Community Market in the town park 4pm – 7pm – Enjoy music, food, produce, crafts, wine and beer tasting.

Beginning in March Every Friday and Saturday through October – Tour the historic grounds of the Kennedy Gold Mine in Jackson.

Preston Castle in Ione – Tour this majestic site full of mystery and history most Saturdays April – August.  Special events throughout the year.

The Second Saturday of each month the Historic Knight’s Foundry is open for tours at 10am, 12pm and 2pm.

Built as a boys’ reform school in 1894 and in use until 1960, Preston Castle was left in disrepair and is now being slowly restored to share the chilling history, haunting and great setting with visitors.  The Preston Castle offers delight to thrill seekers and photographers alike.

The Kennedy Mine was one of the deepest and richest gold mines in the Mother Lode.

Open April – October on weekends and holidays. Guided and Self-Guided tours available.  The Kennedy Mine is a nod to the history of our region and the hardworking men who gave their lives in a tragic accident.

This Sutter Creek gem is on the list of the 11 most endangered Historic Sites in the US.

Open the 2nd Saturday of every month.  The Knight Foundry is a premier relic of Mother Lode gold mining history. From precision equipment for our hard-rock gold mines, to the lights of San Francisco, to the impulse turbine systems that powered many of the state’s hydroelectric plants, the Foundry literally helped to build California.

Indian Grinding Rock State Park

Indian Grinding Rock State Park

A small and impactful park with hiking and a museum.

Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park is located in Pine Grove, CA. The park has open meadows and large valley oaks that provided the Native Americans of this area with an ample supply of acorns to grind in the largest collection of mortar holes in North America!  The park has a wonderful museum, hiking trails and an annual Native American celebration “Big Time” at the end of September.

Explore 80 feet underground in a natural cave on walkways and stairs.  Enjoy the sluice box and pan for gems, and wander the property to see the effects of hydraulic mining during the gold rush.

The Black Chasm is a natural cave with the standard Stalactites and Stalagmites. What makes it special is that it contains Helictites.
